Frequently asked questions about PhD studies at Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry

  1. What kind of studies does Lithuanian Research Centre provide?

Lithuanian Research Centre For Agriculture and Forestry together with Vytautas Magnus University provides research-based doctoral studies in the fields of:

  • Agronomy;
  • Forestry;
  • Biochemistry;
  • Ecology and Environmental Science.
  1. How long does the study last and will I get a scholarship?

LAMMC doctoral studies last for 4 years (only full-time).

A monthly scholarship in the first year is 741 €, since the second year till the end of the studies it is 858 € for all PhD students. The fixed amount for the conduction of experiments will be provided each year.

  1. What are the main evaluation criteria of applicants for PhD studies?

Admission to doctoral studies is based on an open competition, which is held once a year – in June or September (depends on the science field). The most important criteria are:

  • Published or accepted to be published scientific publications;
  • Grade point average of the master’s diploma;
  • Motivation interview, obligatory for all applicants (either face to face meeting or via Internet).
  1. Do I have to be present at the meeting of the admission committee?

No, You do not need to come to the meeting, the meeting will be organized using remote meeting IT technologies.

  1. What are the main documents I need to prepare for the competition?

Admission requirements:

  • Diploma of master’s degree or qualifications adequate to it, its annex/supplement;
  • Notarised translation of the master’s degree diploma and its supplement into the English language;
  • Document recognizing the qualifications acquired abroad issued by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education of Lithuania;
  • 2 letters of recommendation;
  • CV;
  • List of scientific publications (if there are any) and their copies;
  • Copy of ID document.

IMPORTANT: the recognition of the qualifications may take more than 3 months, therefore we recommend that You apply for the recognition of Your qualifications as soon as You decide to participate in the competition.   1. Do I need Visa?

If You are a non-European resident, You need a D visa for studies in Lithuania. Before You apply for Visa, please contact our institution for the additional information as You will also need the documents prepared by us. NOTE – You can apply for Study D visa only.

  1. When do the studies start?

The studies start on the 1st of October.

  1. What are the main tasks I will have to accomplish during the PhD studies?

During Your PhD studies You will have to:

  • take study courses (30 ECT);
  • conduct the planned research work;
  • write and publish at least 2 scientific articles;
  • participate in at least 2 conferences (one should be international);
  • write a dissertation (thesis);
  • defend the thesis.

IMPORTANT: the thesis may be also prepared as a review of Your research articles if You publish no less than 4 in journals indexed in Clarivate analytics WoS and having an Impact factor.

  1. Do You provide accommodation for PhD students?

No, at the moment we have only a few rooms where students can stay temporarily until they find another place to live. We will help you to find another place (rent a flat). It is not very difficult to find the place around.
