Green Deal

Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC) is a state research institute with leading research programs in agronomy, forestry, biochemistry and environment.

The research scope of LAMMC is closely related to The European Green Deal:

  • EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030
  • Farm to Fork Strategy
  • A sustainable CAP (common agricultural policy)
  • EU Energy System Integration Strategy
  • EU climate action

LAMMC research and experimental development assist to implementation of The European Green Deal in the areas:

Biopotential of plants

  • Research for the sustainable crops production, vital for stable, competitive diversified agricultural and bioeconomy development under the changing climate and market.
  • Innovative agronomic management practices for resilience circular farming, ecosystems, and resource use efficiency.
  • Non-food crops and feedstocks for bio-based value-added products.
  • Greenhouse gas emission measurements.

Leader Dr. Žydrė Kadžiulienė, zydre.kadziuliene@lammc.lt

Sustainable forestry

  • Investigations of natural forest regeneration for establishing the ecological forestry systems.
  • Forest health monitoring: impact of air pollution on forest vegetation, impact of ground-level ozone, etc.
  • Forest carbon sequestration: CO2 turnover between soil and atmosphere; soil carbon stocks; carbon stocks in forest biomass and in harvested wood products.
  • Research on forest resources and economic efficiency of their usage.

Leader Dr. Marius Aleinikovas, marius.aleinikovas@lammc.lt

Plant pathology and protection

  • Assessment of the risk of harmful organisms’ outbreaks in the context of global warming.
  • Setting up of effective control strategies for harmful organisms, giving priority to the safest possible environmental measures.
  • Development of biological mathematical models for predicting outbreaks of individual pathogens or pests before they have spread.

Leader Dr. Roma Semaškienė, roma.semaskiene@lammc.lt

Smart horticulture

  • Model studies of differentiated and complex effects of various climatic and environmental factors on plants.
  • Improvement of environmentally friendly fruit and vegetable growing systems.
  • Creation and adaptation of resource-efficient horticultural management technologies, based on mechanization, robotics, hyperspectral imaging.
  • Management, control, and prevention of phytoviruses in horticulture plants due to the warming climate through the introduction of advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Plant adaptation to changing climate. For example, management of plant photophysiological processes.
  • Development of new biologically valuable fruit and vegetable products.

Leader Dr. Giedrė Samuolienė, giedre.samuoliene@lammc.lt

Soil quality and productivity

  • Evaluation of contrasting agroecosystem exploitation practices on GHG emission reduction.
  • Soil physico-chemical, biophysical quality evaluation, bioeconomy economy improvement on Cambisol, Retisol.
  • Assessment of the potential for increasing carbon sequestration through sustainable crop production technologies geared towards soil chemical (acidification) and physical (erosion) degradation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Comparison behavior of different agricultural and forest soil resources being passed an anthropogenic pressure, with natural, anthropogenically low-effected soil resources.
  • Digital mapping agroecosystem exploitation intensity for future scenarios.

Leader Dr. Virginijus Feiza, virginijus.feiza@lammc.lt

Genetics and plant breeding

  • Breeding of annual and perennial crops for sustainable production chains, biodiversity, and environment.
  • Genetic control mechanisms and inheritance of traits and characteristics of plants.
  • Methods for early diagnosis of valuable plant genotypes and systems for targeted plant genotype modification and identification.
  • Plant adaptation to abiotic and biotic stresses; changes in plants adaptivity to low temperatures.

Leaders Prof. Dr. Habilitatus Vidmantas Stanys, vidmantas.stanys@lammc.lt, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vytautas Ruzgas, vytautas.ruzgas@lammc.lt

Our researchers are linked to protection of our ecosystem, finding ways to ensure more sustainable food systems, making cleaner energy to be EU climate neutral by 2050.
