Internship of PhD student Aušra Bakšinskaitė at Aarhus University

September 13–26, 2021, a PhD student in Agronomy Sciences at Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Aušra Bakšinskaitė, did an internship at Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Denmark. In co-operation with the Department of Agroecology, the EJP SOIL programme “Visiting Scientist Support – 1st Call” was implemented, which aims to strengthen the co-operation of researchers across Europe. The main goal of the internship was to master the methods for determination of nitrogen and carbon isotope migration in plants and soil, which will also be applied in her PhD research (topic of the dissertation – “Optimisation of yield and quality of agricultural crops using natural resources”).

Throughout the visit, the PhD student was supervised by prof. Dr. Jim Rasmussen, who also introduced her to the group of researchers involved in the EJP SOIL project: Dr. Zhi Liang, Dr. Chiara De Notaris, Dr. Kirsten Enggrob, Dr. Esben Oster Mortense and Dr. Leanne Elizbeth.

During the internship, the doctoral student delved into the methods for determination of isotope transfer to the plant and soil, which can be used to monitor carbon and nitrogen migration in plants and soil. These methods can also be used to calculate isotope distribution in plant parts and soil. During the visit, a lecture on soil organic matter at Aarhus University, delivered by prof. Dr. Jim Rasmussen and assistant Zhi Liang, was attended.
