LAMMC representatives in SETAC Europe 35th Annual Meeting

On May 11–15, the SETAC Europe 35th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry was held in Vienna, Austria, and was attended by Dr. Karolina Barčauskaitė, Head of the Agrobiology Laboratory of the Institute of Agriculture, LAMMC, Algimanta Kundrotaitė, PhD student, and Dovilė Motiejauskaitė, laboratory assistant.

During the meeting, various seminars and events were held related to environmental and human health protection, development of sustainable solutions, and assessment of pollution impacts. The main focus was on toxicological studies, pollutant residues and their impact in the environment, as well as the analysis of environmental policy and innovative interdisciplinary research methods. Much attention was paid to new technologies, modelling tools and regulatory aspects to create a safer and more sustainable future.

During the event, the participants presented the posters:

  • Karolina Barčauskaitė. Comparative study on contaminants in sewage sludge and its derived compost: heavy metals, organic pollutants and microplastics,
  • Algimanta Kundrotaitė. Characterisation of biochar obtained from different biowastes at different pyrolysis temperatures,
  • Dovilė Motiejauskaitė. Towards sustainability: eco-friendly fluorescent dyes in microplastic analyses.

The presentations by students Dovilė Motiejauskaitė and Algimanta Kundrotaitė attracted the attention of other participants of the meeting. Information was shared about fluorescent dyes used in microplastic research, as well as a discussion about various biowastes and the biochar produced from them, and how the type of biowaste affects the properties of biochar.

The visit of K. Barčauskaitė and A. Kundrotaitė was funded by the 2021–2027 EU Funds Investment Programme Economic Recovery and Resilience Measure “Next Generation Lithuania” (NextGenerationEU), project No. 10-038-T-0198. The visit of D. Motiejauskaitė was funded by the Interreg South Baltic Programme project “Innovative solutions for sewage sludge management in small wastewater treatment plants” (ISMA), No. STHB.02.02-IP.01-0007/23; the study was funded by the Research Council of Lithuania, project No. P-ST-24-53.
