PhD student V. Čėsna attended an internship at Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO)

May 1–May 25. Second course PhD student from the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Institute of Forestry, Department of Forest Protection and Game Management Vytautas Čėsna attended an internship at Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), Norway. The internship was attended as part of 3-year (2022–2024) project that is funded by Nordic Forest Research (SNS): PROTECT. Topic of the scientific visit was defence priming as a mechanism behind induced resistance.

During the internship, high potential plant defence mechanism “defence priming” was carried out. Norway spruce seeds were affected by chemicals such as methyl-jasmonate (MeJA), β-aminobutyric (BABA), hexanoic, and pipecolic acids. It was planted affected tree seeds both in Petri dishes using in vitro screening and in cones with three different soil types. The forest soil was sterilized using a new steam technology (https://soilsteam.com/). Moreover, using DNA extraction, it was identified pathogenic fungal species and evaluated quality of soil steaming.
